START Prize of the Austrian Science Fund awarded

24.06.2011

Philip Walther was awarded with the START Prize of the Austrian Science Fund.

The START - Prize is awarded to outstanding young researchers on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Science and Research (BMWF).

Philip Walther will use this prize for to build a photonic quantum simulator that is capable of exploring new physical phenomena in quantum chemistry, solid-state physics and other physical systems. The quantum simulation experiments will be achieved by developing new techniques for the generation and manipulation of multi-photon entanglement. The main idea is to combine new photon sources and very efficient single-photon detectors using superconducting technology. The results will be not only of relevance for studying novel quantum states in previously inaccessible parameter regime, but also for the implementation of new protocols in quantum computing.
